History: Shamballa is name both of an unusually temperate Himalayan valley and of the institution that dominates that valley: a monastery that has served for millennia as the primary academy and training ground of most of Earth’s users of white magic. Shrouded in mystery, the valley’s true nature and location are unknown even to most of the academy’s students, who are spirited there magically and returned to their native lands when their term is up – or indeed, some who attend astrally, never physically visiting the valley at all.
At times, for reasons known only to them, the monks of Shamballa have closed off access to the valley, sometimes for a century or more, and at those times it is left to prospective arcane students to learn the arts as best they can, possibly turning to scattered tribal traditions of magic, or braving the moral and mortal peril of the Scholomance.
The Ascended Masters who operate the academy constantly urge the students to employ their abilities to the benefit of mankind, but appear to choose for themselves to remain largely above the fray – or are perhaps somehow barred from employing their abilities in most situations. Recent history supplies only a scant handful of examples of a Master interfering with the course of normal events. On one such rare occasion, they saved Doctor Atlas and Adam Nova from an avalanche in a nearby valley by transporting them to safety inside Shamballa (but erasing their memories of how to return to the lost valley after leaving); on another, they were glimpsed briefly lending power to some of Earth’s mystic heroes in the most desperate hours of the Vengeance Wars.
