The Golden Age
1938 - Exemplar, first and greatest superhuman in modern history, officially reveals himself to the world and vows to fight for justice. The original Diskman begins fighting crime and Fifth Columnists on the streets of New York. In the fires of the Spanish Civil War, Dirk Turbine becomes the Blue Bolt. The Society of Power Men is founded in New York. The Golden Age has begun.
1939 - World War II breaks out. Hitler announces dawn of new race of Aryan supermen. Individual members of the Society of Power Men are observed helping the Allies at the front lines, drawing sharp criticism from conservative politicians in the US. “Exemplar’s girlfriend,” socialite Wendy Westman, kidnapped by persons unknown and held hostage in Tierra Nova, with a statement issued claiming she will be freed when Exemplar surrenders himself for scientific study; she is instead freed after epic battle in Metropoli.
1940 - Blue Bolt and Exemplar smash ring of Nazi spies led by fiendish Professor Kaiser. Diskman ends crime spree of Lady Mesmera.
1941 - Pearl Harbor. US enters WWII. Society of Power Men made official agents of US government by special agreement between Exemplar and FDR. It is thought they will end the war quickly, but first foray into occupied territory leads to nearly fatal defeat at the hands of Nazi superman Oberst and his power-sapping Heidegger Theorem. The Diskman is badly injured, necessitating his replacement while he heals. Super-powered stalemate begins.
1942 - US battle group led by Exemplar defeats giant sea monster unleashed by Japan. Oberst recovers the Spear of Destiny from its hiding place in the lost Arabian city of Irem.
1943 - Oberst, Professor Kaiser, Blitzkrieg and Frau Wunderbar launch an invasion of America, landing in Hampton Roads, VA, smashing several Army and Navy bases, killing thousands, and marching on Washington. The Society of Power Men mobilizes to stop them; in a protracted battle, the two super-teams fight each other to exhaustion in the very streets of Washington. Oberst is on the verge of driving the Spear of Destiny through Exemplar’s chest when he is felled by a “peace ray” from the pistol of Adam Nova, who has come to Washington to announce that Tierra Nova is joining the cause of the Allies. The tide of war begins to turn.
1944 - D-Day. Allied forces land in France. In a battle over the skies of the English Channel, just out of range of the power-canceling effect of the Heidegger Theorem, Exemplar drives the Spear of Destiny through the chest of Oberst, ending the menace of the Nazi warlord. Shamed by his act of homicide, Exemplar announces he will retire at the end of the war and marry his girlfriend Wendy Westman.
1945 - WWII ends. Hitler and staff slain and consumed by bound H-type entities released by dissolution of the Heidegger Theorem. Blitzkrieg killed in final battle with the Diskman’s violent, unstable replacement. Professor Kaiser vanishes, his lab found stripped of anything useful. Frau Wunderbar placed on trial by sorcerers of the world, found guilty, stripped of her magic words, and placed under a geas to do penance.
1946 - Tierra Nova announces to the world that it has developed the atom bomb.
1948 - In the streets of Los Angeles the Diskman confronts and defeats his replacement, who has undergone a full psychotic break.
1950 - Doctor Atlas’s assistant Marco is found murdered in New Jersey. No suspect is ever brought to trial. The scientist begins to withdraw from the public view.
1954 - The Society of Power Men are accused of being Communists by the House Un-American Activities Committee. They cease official operations as a group; many retire, start families, or go underground. The Golden Age ends.
